LA MALETA, POR COLECTIVO CAUSA SORORA

“El femicidio es la más grave de lasviolencias de género, en la cual una mujer es asesinada por su condición demujer, usualmente a manos de su pareja actual o pasada, o de otro hombre conquien no tiene o tuvo una relación de pareja. No es un homicidio común, sinoproducto normalmente de una violencia escalonada y una relación desigual entrela mujer y el hombre femicida”.*
“En el femicidio ampliado se incluyen lasmuertes violentas de mujeres, por género, en donde no había una relación de matrimonioo unión libre: ejemplo, las muertes durante el noviazgo, después de undivorcio, luego del cese de una unión de hecho y las que ocurren en el ámbitopúblico, a raíz de un ataque sexual, entre otros”.*

Entre el sábado 3 y el domingo 4 de agostode 2018, dos femicidios consternaron a la sociedad costarricense. María Trinidad Mathus, mexicana de 25 años,murió ahogada a manos de dos asaltantes en Santa Teresa de Cóbano, Puntarenas. Horasdespués, Arantxa López Gutiérrez, española de 30 años, era estrangulada por undesconocido en la playa de Tortuguero, Limón.

Ambas disfrutaban de la naturaleza y labelleza de las playas del país cuando encontraron la muerte de una forma atrozy violenta, en manos de hombres que quisieron abusar de ellas y finalmenteterminaron con sus vidas.

Los sucesos, con pocas horas de diferenciay dos localidades distintas en el país, encendieron nuevamente las alarmassobre la inseguridad que enfrentan las mujeres día a día.

Durante los siguientes días y ante lafrustración, el enojo y el dolor, se realizó una convocatoria ciudadana enredes sociales para el viernes 10 de agosto en la Plaza de Cultura, en elcentro de la capital San José, como muestra de solidaridad por las víctimas deestos crímenes y para demostrar en la calle la rabia e indignación por lavulnerabilidad en la que continúan viviendo las mujeres, sin lograr ververdaderos cambios y transformaciones en una sociedad permisiva e indiferentefrente a la violencia machista contra las mujeres.

LA VIGILIA
El viernes 10 de agosto se realizó lavigilia a las 5:00 pm, decenas de mujeres se manifestaron para repudiar laviolencia de género y el machismo, al canto de consignas y carteles conmensajes de apoyo y denuncia.

El colectivo Causa Sorora propone unaacción participativa y llevan una maleta intervenida con un texto que dice:
EN MEMORIA DE ARANTXA Y MARIA TRINIDAD.
En su interior hay papeles y un marcador yse invitan a todas las personas a dejar los mensajes con sus emociones ysentimientos en ese momento.
“Hemos traído esta maleta en símbolo delevento que nos está reuniendo. Es un momento en el que nos debemos mantenerunidas, sororas, con solidaridad, para poder procesar este duelo que al finalde cuentas nos afecta a todas. (...) Estas mujeres perdieron la vida de manerabrutal en manos de hombres asesinos, femicidas.”*

La maleta fue colocada al centro de uncírculo multitudinario y sirvió para concentrar alrededor de ella los tributosy flores que llevaron para rendir honor a estas mujeres.

Se estableció la dinámica de micrófonoabierto. La persona voluntaria que deseaba pasar al frente tomaba un bastón conuna cinta rosada y una vez terminada su intervención lo pasaba a la siguientepersona.
La gran mayoría de participantes fueronmujeres manifestando enojo, su descontento por la inseguridad y el miedo a laviolencia de los hombres. Acososcallejeros, exhibicionismo en buses, manoseos indeseables, fueron también partede los reclamos. Algunos hombres tambiéncompartieron su preocupación por la falta de acciones de sus pares masculinos yrelataron experiencias de violencias de mujeres conocidas.
Otras mujeres tuvieron la valentía y lafortaleza de compartir a viva voz sus propias experiencias de abuso de parte dehombres cercanos a su entorno, profesores, abuelos, tíos, colegas y amistadesque vulneraron su intimidad e integridad físicas y abusaron de ellas.
Entre las participaciones al micrófonoabierto, mujeres artistas compartieron sus habilidades y ofrecieron suespectáculo como su apoyo a la manifestación.
Alrededor de 150 a 200 personas llenaronla Plaza de la Cultura. Mujeres de todaslas edades, desde niñas que animadas coreaban las consignas, muchachas, mujeresy adultas mayores y algunos varones.

Todos estos testimonios fueron compartidosde forma espontánea, sin ninguna presión, con un micrófono abierto frente atodos y todas las presentes.
Muy fuerte la participación de laspersonas que compartieron sus vidas con estas mujeres horas antes de su muerteen los sitios de recreación que estaban visitando en el país.
Un grupo de tres jóvenes, dos mujeres y unhombre, relataron como acompañaron durante el proceso de denuncia a lasobreviviente del ataque, otra turista compañera de Maria Trinidad, quien dioparte a las autoridades. La estadía ofrecida y el acompañamiento que dieron aesta mujer fueron clave para que se lograra abrir la investigación y dar con lacaptura de los sospechosos.

El evento finalizó alrededor de las 8:30 p.m.pero se extendió un hora más. Al concluir las participaciones, nuevamente seinvitó a las personas a dejar sus mensajes en la maleta.

Fue el momento de mayor participación yalrededor de la maleta se prendieron las velas y se dejaron los tributos quelas personas llevaban y no habían podido entregar. Se generó un ambiente solemne y los últimosen marcharse guardaban silencio y algunos se mantenían abrazados.
Al finalizar la actividad, se recogió todoel material, notas, carteles, flores, tributos y candelas y fueron colocadosdentro de la misma maleta.

Hasta que las últimas flores semarchitaron se conservó una especie de altar que duró aproximadamente un mes.
Posteriormente se coordinó una reunión conel grupo y por primera vez se abrió la maleta que había permanecido cerradadesde la noche de la vigilia.
Dentro de la maleta había decenas depapeles, cartulinas y post it, candelas y unas flores de tela.

Todo el material fue inventariado yfotografiado.
Esta instalación pretende recrear elespacio que se surgió durante esas horas en la Plaza de la Cultura, exponer losmensajes y continuar generando un impacto de concientización sobre la violenciaque cotidianamente enfrentan las mujeres.

No obstante, y lastimosamente se levantóuna lista de las mujeres asesinadas en Costa Rica en el presente año, con elfin de denunciar la lista junto con una nueva presentación de esta instalaciónque procedió a ser ubicada a manera de instalación artística en una de lassalas de exposición de la Biblioteca Nacional de Costa Rica Miguel Obregón Lizano, acompañada de lasegunda exposición de arte de la muestra 2018 del colectivo.
Fue asícomo gracias a este ocasión se alzó la voz sobre este temadurante los últimos días de noviembre, todo el mes de diciembre y hasta el 30de enero. Donde además se incorporaron nuevos mensajes y tributos por parte delas personas que interactuaron con la pieza.
Fue de esta manera Causa Sorora conmemoróel día 25 de noviembre Día Internacional de laEliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer y se dio a conocer por primera vezlo comprendido alrededor de este nuevo y poderoso símbolo de la realidad en laque vivimos las mujeres en Costa Rica.
Ampliamos el mensaje para rendir honor a otras mujeres costarricenses víctimas de feminicidio durante el 2018.

En la Biblioteca Nacional, tuvimos la oportunidad de presentar al público por dos meses y en honor al Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer 25 de noviembre una instalación con todos los mensajes y tributos que fueron hechos por Costa Rica

BetweenSaturday 3 and Sunday 4 August 2018, two femicides dismayed the Costa Ricansociety. María Trinidad Mathus, a 25-year-old Mexican woman, was drowned by twoassailants in Santa Teresa de Cóbano, Puntarenas. Hours later, Arantxa LópezGutiérrez, a 30-year-old Spaniard, was strangled by a stranger on Tortuguerobeach, Limón.

Both enjoyedthe nature and beauty of the country's beaches when they met their death in anatrocious and violent way, in the hands of men who wanted to abuse them andfinally ended their lives.

The events,with a few hours apart and two different locations in the country, once againignited alarms about the insecurity that women face every day.

During thefollowing days and in the face of frustration, anger and pain, a publicannouncement was made on social networks for Friday, August 10 at the Plaza deCultura, in the center of the capital San José, as a sign of solidarity for thevictims of these crimes and to demonstrate in the street the rage andindignation for the vulnerability in which women continue to live, withoutseeing true changes and transformations in a permissive and indifferent societyin the face of gender-based violence against women.

THE VIGIL
On Friday,August 10, the vigil was held at 5:00 pm, dozens of women demonstrated torepudiate gender violence and machismo, chanting slogans and posters withmessages of support and denunciation.

Thecollective Causa Sorora proposes a participative action and they carry anintervened suitcase with a text that says:
IN MEMORY OFARANTXA AND MARIA TRINIDAD.
Inside thereare papers and a bookmark and all people are invited to leave the messages withtheir emotions and feelings at that moment.
"We havebrought this suitcase as a symbol of the event that is gathering us. It is a momentin which we must hold together, sorority, with solidarity, to be able toprocess this grief that in the end affects us all. (...) These women lost theirlives brutally in the hands of murderous, femicidal men. "*

The suitcasewas placed at the center of a large circle and served to concentrate around itthe tributes and flowers that were brought to honor these women.

The openmicrophone dynamics was established. The volunteer who wanted to go to thefront took a cane with a pink ribbon and once finished his intervention hepassed it to the next person.
The vastmajority of participants were women expressing anger, their discontent overinsecurity and fear of male violence. Street harassment, exhibitionism onbuses, undesirable handling, were also part of the complaints. Some men alsoshared their concern about the lack of actions of their male partners andreported experiences of violence by well-known women.
Other womenhad the courage and strength to share their own experiences of abuse by menclose to their environment, teachers, grandparents, uncles, colleagues andfriends who violated their physical intimacy and integrity and abused them.
Among theparticipation in the open microphone, women artists shared their skills andoffered their show as their support for the demonstration.
Around 150 to200 people filled the Plaza de la Cultura. Women of all ages, from girls whoanimated chanted slogans, girls, women and older adults and some men.

All thesetestimonies were shared spontaneously, without any pressure, with an openmicrophone in front of everyone and everyone present.
Very strongparticipation of the people who shared their lives with these women hoursbefore his death in the recreation sites that were visiting in the country.
A group ofthree young people, two women and one man, told how they accompanied thesurvivor of the attack, another tourist companion of Maria Trinidad, who gavepart to the authorities. The offered stay and the accompaniment that they gaveto this woman were key so that it was managed to open the investigation and tofind with the capture of the suspects.

The eventended around 8:30 p.m. but it extended an hour more. At the end of theparticipations, people were again invited to leave their messages in thesuitcase.

It was themoment of greatest participation and around the suitcase the candles were litand the tributes that people were carrying and had not been able to deliverwere left. A solemn atmosphere was generated and the last ones to leave weresilent and some of them were holding each other.
At the end ofthe activity, all the material, notes, posters, flowers, tributes and candleswere collected and placed inside the same suitcase.

Until thelast flowers withered, a kind of altar was preserved that lasted about a month.
Later ameeting with the group was coordinated and for the first time the suitcase thathad remained closed since the night of the vigil was opened.
Inside thesuitcase were dozens of papers, cards and post it, candles and cloth flowers.

All thematerial was inventoried and photographed.
Thisinstallation aims to recreate the space that arose during those hours in thePlaza de la Cultura, expose the messages and continue generating an impact ofawareness about the violence that women face on a daily basis.

However, andunfortunately a list of the women murdered in Costa Rica this year was raised,in order to denounce the list along with a new presentation of thisinstallation that proceeded to be located as an artistic installation in one ofthe exhibition rooms of the National Library of Costa Rica Miguel ObregónLizano, accompanied by the second art exhibition of the 2018 exhibition of thecollective.
It was thusthat thanks to this occasion the voice was raised on this subject during thelast days of November, the whole month of December and until January 30. Wherealso new messages and tributes were incorporated by the people who interactedwith the piece.
It was inthis way Causa Sorora commemorated the 25th of November International Day forthe Elimination of Violence against Women and it became known for the firsttime what was understood around this new and powerful symbol of the reality inwhich women live in Costa Rica.
We expandedthe message to honor other Costa Rican women victims of femicide during 2018.
