This performative video work shows a woman engaged in covering her face with rose leaves.
As a metaphor for the absurd above and beyond term "beauty", the fragility of beauty and the canons of beauty, the video reveals an obscure image of woman, which is also shaped by transiency and impermanence.
Excerpts from the poem "Sacred Emily" by Gertrude Stein, in which she created the sentence "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.", form the sound collage to the video piece.

In an exaggerated gender specific communication role, a woman is constantly giving positive encouragement toward an unseen male discussion partner, without having an own opinion, or something else to say than to support the male counterpart.
In this performative video work, a gendered communication role model is directed to an imaginary male opponent and describes how the usage of language can be defined as a relation and structure of power between the two social sexes.

WOMEN IN WAR

This video work came into being during a research on the tag 'women' on YouTube, and through this finding stereotyped videos with women's images entitled like 'Most Beautiful Women', 'Famous Sexy Women', and so forth. By re-editing the found videos and underlaying the material with sounds from reports on women in war and violence against women, the final video became a strange subversion of women's media images and the woman as a commodified object becomes obvious. The video is split between women's images in media and the sound of the real, to break with a world of male illusions and to enter the field of male transgression. 'Women in War' is a metaphor for women's images in the media war and real war.

THE ART OF AGING

This video work reveals the irrational use of anti-aging products in times of a youth-obsessed culture and its ageism. Even the sophisticated naming of cosmetic products are obscure and describe promises far from any reality. The world anti-aging products market stands enthused by the growing need for appearance-enhancing and age-defying skin cosmetics among the aging population according to a report by Global Industry Analysts. In addition to changes in lifestyles effected by modern consumers to increase their chances of longevity, changing practices in personal grooming is resulting in more time and money being spent on external grooming to minimize visible effects of aging.
Despite great demand, many such products and treatments have not been proven to give lasting or major positive effects. Researchers found out that the top-rated products smoothed out some fine lines and wrinkles by less than 10 percent over 12 weeks, which is barely visible to the human eye.

FROM THE LIFE OF MY OLD WOMAN FRIEND

The video depicts a woman’s story from a far away century. Based on the images from the popular German novel ‘Aus dem Leben meiner alten Freundin’ by the female author Wilhelmine Heimburg in 1894, it depicts images of suffering and passive women, whereby the images have been created by a male artist. The video questions the translation of women’s stories passed on from one generation to another, and also questions of how we see the women’s images nowadays in a different century. How much of the images still belongs transferred into the current society without any nostalgia?
Short Biography Evelin Stermitz
Evelin Stermitz, M.A., M.Phil., studied Media and New Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and holds the degree in Philosophy from Media Studies. Her works in the field of media and new media art focus on post-structuralist feminist art practices. In 2008 she founded ArtFem.TV – Art and Feminism ITV (http://www.artfem.tv) and received a Special Mention for the project at the IX Festival Internacional de la Imagen, VI Muestra Monográfica de Media Art, University of Caldas, Manizales, Colombia, in 2010.
